WALTZ
Joel Cossette reached out to me to create a lyric video for his single “Waltz” from his EP Songs About Anxiety. And Stuff. His music is raw, vulnerable, and real. I drew inspiration from the pain in his voice and the lyrical imagery of the song.
The video is a handwritten love note to an ex. I studied waltz step diagrams and translate those into animation. Many of the illustrations I drew by hand and imported into After Effects. I edited them so they seemed to be etched onto the page.
I also played with the concept of light and dark. The video begins with a white light that slowly fades into a paper texture. The singer reflects on a happy memory with his ex. As the song bleeds into the chorus, the paper floods with black ink as his emotions rise and the music swells. We are brought into the anxious mind of the artist as he tries to reason with his decision on ending the relationship.
